Food for Fines

Food for Fines is back! From 12/1-12/30, The Library will forgive $1 in overdue fines for each non-perishable food item you bring to the checkout desk. We will forgive up to a maximum of $20 and all food will be donated to the Mahwah Center For Food Action to be distributed to those in need throughout northern New Jersey.

The Center for Food Action asks for items with a long shelf-life, including: peanut butter & jelly, canned meats, canned fruits, canned vegetables and tomato products, canned soups and beans, pasta and pasta sauce, boxed macaroni and cheese, rice, bottled 100% fruit juice, hot and cold cereals, infant formula & baby food, diapers, baby wipes, laundry detergent and dental hygiene products.

Homemade items, open packages, perishable items, repackaged or expired items are not permitted. The food items must be brought to the Checkout Desk in boxes or plastic bags.

Patrons can pay up to $20.00 of their library fines with donated food. Overdue items must be returned in good condition before the donation can be applied as payment.  Food for Fines applies to late fees only and may not be applied toward replacement fees for lost or damaged materials, lost cards, or future overdue fines. Patrons must show their library cards as well. The Food for Fines offer will not extend to other BCCLS libraries.
