Starting in the fall of 2011, tax bills for all New Jersey property owners include a separate line labeled “library tax.”
The Library Board of Trustees wants to reassure you that this is not a new tax. A state law passed in 2010 requires the public library tax to be displayed separately from the general municipal tax line. The amount of your general municipal tax line was reduced by the same amount shown as library tax, so it doesn’t result in an increase in your overall taxes.
For the homeowner with an average assess value of $500,000 in 2013, the tax rate of $.036 per $100 of assessed value translates into $15./month — only $.49/day — to support the Library.
As a Mahwah Township taxpayer, you have access to a world of information at your Library, and for less than $.50/day we’re sure you will agree it is a bargain.
Services that the Library provides include over 130,000 of the latest best-selling books, CDs and DVDs, plus access to over 5,000,000 items available to borrow through the Bergen County Cooperative Library System. In addition, the Library offers an expansive collection of downloadable eBooks and digital audiobooks as well as streaming music and videos — all without additional tax support.
But the Library is more than books. We offer concerts and informative lectures for adults, after-school clubs and activities for teens, early literacy programming for kids, summer reading programs for people of all ages, and so much more every day.
Now, with the newly renovated Lower Level, the Library is a great place to meet with friends and neighbors. It truly is the cultural center of our town.
