Interested in working or voluneering with the Mahwah Public Library?  The Mahwah Public Library connects you with the world of literacy, cultural diversity, and learning. In all cases, excellent training is provided to ensure that your experience is both enjoyable and fruitful. You will be able to acquire new skills and gain valuable experience, expand your social horizons, serve in your own neighborhood and most importantly, be appreciated for all your hard work!

Paid positions are typically posted on the BCCLS "want-ads" page.  Open positions are also posted on this page from time to time.

Interested in volunteering?  The library can always use more help!  The Library uses a large contingency of first rate volunteers who perform a wide range of other tasks that benefit the Library. If you wish to volunteer your time please call 201-529-7323 or visit the library to see what times are available.

Volunteer ESL Tutors

The Library is starting an English as a Second Language program and looking for adult volunteers to help as ESL tutors. 

To be a volunteer, you need to enjoy working with people, demonstrate proficiency in reading and writing, and have a genuine enthusiasm for learning. Adult volunteers do not need to have a college degree or previous experience as a tutor. The Library will provide training through the Literacy Volunteers of Pascack Valley.  The training consists of four 2-1/2 hour session .

Part-Time Handyman/Maintenance Person

The Mahwah Public Library seeks a skilled, hard-working handyman to join the team. We are looking for a detail-oriented handyman who is passionate about maintaining the Library as a beautiful, welcoming destination for all Mahwah residents.

Under general supervision, the handyman performs routine preventive maintenance to ensure that building systems operate efficiently and that the physical condition of buildings is preserved or improved.   The handyman sets up, moves and tears down chairs, tables, equipment and shelving; paints walls and ceilings; repairs damage to walls; installs and maintains fixtures and locks; repairs basic plumbing and electrical problems; and performs other maintenance and janitorial work as required.  The successful applicant will be meticulous, self-starting, adaptable, able to balance multiple projects and thrive in a collaborative environment.  Experience required.  A complete position description is available to download here.

Starting salary is $16.50/hour.  This part-time, 20 hour/week, position includes paid time off.

The successful applicant must meet the residency requirement outlined in the New Jersey First Act and pass a background check.

Circulation Assistant – P/T Weekend & Fill-In

The Mahwah Public Library seeks an enthusiastic, customer-focused individual to join the team as a part-time Circulation Assistant.

Under general direction of the Supervising Library Assistant, the Circulation Assistant is an integral member of the circulation team and one of the primary points of contact for our community. The successful candidate will be passionate about library services and will thrive in a collaborative, team-based environment where outstanding customer service is the norm. 

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to, checking in/out materials, registering patrons, assisting patrons with account information, packing/unpacking deliveries, and assisting patrons locating items in the Library collections.   As a member of the circulation team, the Circulation Assistant may be called on to answer basic informational questions; provide reading recommendations; assist with copiers, computers and technology; and, promote Library collections and services.  May assist with program preparation, basic room setup and other responsibilities as required.  In addition to being organized and technologically savvy, the Circulation Assistant will be customer-focused and able to work effectively with other staff in order to serve the community.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of one-year experience in a library or customer-centric retail setting, possess excellent customer service skills and enjoy interacting with a varied clientele in a busy environment.  Proficiency with computers is expected and familiarity with Polaris and other library technology is strongly preferred. 

Hours for this position include at least two Sunday each month, from 12:30pm – 5pm, plus other hours as may be mutually agreeable.  Ability to fill in at other times is highly desirable.  Rate of pay is $15.51/hour for weekdays and Saturdays and $20.16/hour for Sundays.

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to, answering reference and informational questions; providing readers advisory services and recommendations; assisting patrons with computers and technology; and, promoting Library collections and services including its physical and digital collections.  In addition to being organized and technologically savvy, the Adult Services Assistant/Librarian will be customer-focused and able to work effectively with other staff in order to serve the community.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of one-year experience in a library setting, possess excellent customer service skills and enjoy interacting with a varied clientele in a busy environment.  Proficiency with computers is expected and familiarity with Polaris and other library technology is strongly preferred.  Individuals currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLS program are encouraged to apply. 

Hours for this position are the first and second Saturday of each month, from 9:30am – 5pm.  Ability to fill in at other times is highly desirable.

Rate of pay is $15.51/hour for Library Assistant without MLS or $28.46/hour for Librarian with MLS and NJ public librarian certification.
