History is composed of the steady accumulation of many events. In an age of the instant reporting of news from every corner of our world, sometimes the sheer volume of information can feel overwhelming. This current events group will attempt to quiet the noise and step back to reflect on what the news means, what is its context, and what are the ramifications. We will look at, and reflect on, the daily events and try to discern trends and understand the national picture and the larger world. This group is an opportunity to address topical issues, exchange ideas, and enjoy the stimulation of new perspectives in a social group where people get to meet and discuss current happenings. Subject matter we have already discussed include: The Refugee Crisis in Europe, Automation and How It Effects Employment, The Panama Papers, Saudi Arabia And Its Ruling Elite "The Prize": School Reform in Newark NJ, The Proposed Pilgrim Pipeline, Environmental Concerns Regarding the Pilgrim Pipeline, Brexit and Globalization, Altruism, Self-Interest:Machiavelli's Advice To The Prince Strong Man, The Constitution And .. , and The Presidential Candidates. The sessions are fun and a great opportunity for some intellectual stimulation, together with socializing with interesting people from a variety of backgrounds. Since opinions, by definition, can never be right or wrong, all participants are encouraged to bring their own perspective and history. And, in a non-judgmental framework, express themselves on the issues confronting all thinking people. The Current Events Discussion Group is open to all. Registration not required.
