Astronomy Workshop

  • Event date:
    August 6, 2019 - 3:30pm - 4:30pm
  • Presenter:
    John Huibregtse
  • Age Group: Teens, Tweens
  • Location: Small Meeting Room
  • Type of event: Science & Technology
In this workshop participants will investigate some of the tools and methodologies that astronomers use to learn more about stars, and in particular our Sun.  Engaging, hands-on activities involving flashlights, TV remotes, and plastic beads, will demonstrate how astronomers are able to detect both the visible and invisible energies of the electromagnetic spectrum (visible light, Infrared, and ultraviolet) in order to learn more about objects like our Sun, other stars, galaxies, and even black holes.  Participants will also learn how, by accurately modeling several of the objects that make up our Solar System, they can gain a much better understanding of the size and distance dimensions of the Solar System.  Teens & tweens entering grades 5 & up in September can signup starting on Monday, July 8th.
