Many of our events require registration.  Registration opens for Mahwah cardholders four weeks before the date of the event.Those without a Mahwah Library card are welcome to register two weeks before the event.

  • 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm Explore Science: Layers of the Ocean TO GO
    3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

    Students will recreate the various layers of the ocean in their own density bottle and learn about the different layers and functions in the ocean. Each of the 5 layers of the ocean will be represented in a different solution and color.

    This challenge will be a take-home kit with an instructional video.

    Teens in grades 5 – 9 can join us on Wednesdays 6/29 & 7/6 from 7:15 to 8:00 PM to learn how to storyboard Hollywood-level movies and express yourself through the diverse art of filmmaking! Taught by an award-winning student filmmaker, The Lighthouse Initiative Filmmaking Program covers all aspects of storyboarding your very own film. We’ll learn about the materials used for storyboarding, different techniques, and how it is used to make your film come together!

    10:00 am – 9:00 pm

    Teens in grades 5 and up, will use a variety of supplies and techniques to replicate the function of blubber for various animals. The challenge will be to test to see how long and effective a student’s blubber suit can allow them to withstand ice water! The instructional video will be emailed to all participants.

    3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

    Using air to power these boats in our Sail Boat Extravaganza race will all be determined on the successful construction of the sails. Students will be put to the test to not only design and construct a floating boat, but also to effectively include a sail that will be used to power through a race!

    This challenge will be a take-home kit with an instructional video.

    Let’s go under the sea for a fascinatingOceanexploration with an expansive Museum exhibit of super cool sea creatures as the backdrop – life-size taxidermysharks & stingrays, crabs, coral, sponges, sea stars and more. Plus each participant will dig for and take-home seashell and sea fossil courtesy of DinosaursRock.com! For ages 8 – 17.

  • 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm Explore Science: Cartesian Diver
    3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

    No matter what age the children will love to work with buoyancy and water pressure as they create their very own Cartesian diver in a bottle. Younger children can figure out how to get their glow in the dark diver to move up and down without touching it. While older children will love to make a game of it, by creating two Cartesian divers that they will try to hook onto each other without actually touching the pieces.
