Throughout the summer we are hosting outdoor, socially-distanced story times, book discussions, concerts, and more.  Check individual event descriptions for more information.

EVENT CANCELLED: Scarborough Fair: Simon and Garfunkel Experience with the Guthrie Brothers (OUTSIDE)

This concert has been rescheduled for Sunday December 12th at 2PM in the Winter Room.

Prepare to fall in love again with the music of Simon & Garfunkel. From their first startlingly authentic rendition of Sound of Silence, to their playful version of Cecilia, Jeb Guthrie and Jock Guthrie will have every audience member smiling and singing along. Through songs, stories, trivia and humor, Jeb and Jock Guthrie pay homage to the music of Simon & Garfunkel and playfully engage the audience along the way. The show highlights the brothers’ deep spiritual connection to this music, and to the 60s, the period that made it all happen.

This concert will be outside in the front of the library. No registration or tickets are necessary. Attendance is on a first come basis. Bring your own folding chair as chairs will not be provided. Everyone must maintain social distancing.

Teens & tweens in grades 5 & up can join us for a few rounds of the popular online game Among Us!  We will be using text chat only to discuss who is “sus” and who is not; who will be crew mates & who will be imposters?  Let’s play and find out!  There will be 9 spaces per session, and the special code to join will be emailed to participants before the tournament starts that day.  You can play on your computer using STEAM, or download the game for free on your phone.

Take, Then Make Teen Ceramics Craft from Creatively Yours

Teens entering grades 5 & up in September can choose either a Shark or a Baby Seal to paint!  Starting on Monday, August 2 participants can pick up a special ceramics craft kit which has all of the specific project materials.  Then, they paint their piece at home and can return it no later than Monday, August 9 so their project can be “fired.  Please remember when registering to check off which animal you prefer.

The Statue of Liberty with Kevin Woyce (ZOOM)

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, after more than twenty years of planning, fund raising, and construction. Photographer and author Kevin Woyce will show how she was built and what she symbolizes, and introduce some of the people involved in her creation, including sculptor Frederic Bartholdi, engineer Gustave Eiffel, architect Richard Morris Hunt, and newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer. The program ends with brief histories of Ellis Island and Liberty State Park.

Students will have their building and engineering skills put to the test in our Build a Dog House challenge!  Using limited supplies, students will be challenged with constructing a dog house fit to hold Explore Science’s puppy mascot!  We can’t forget the toys and food bowls too!  This event is for teens & tweens entering grades 5 & up in September; participants will be notified when they can pick up their special kit.  Then on Tuesday, August 3 participants will receive the link to a step-by-step instructional video, and will have the chance to follow along at their leisure!

The Mahwah Library Writers’ Collective meets weekly with the goal to support adult writers at all levels who are committed to their work. The collective will allow writers of fiction and creative non-fiction to share their stories and receive constructive feedback and you do not need to be published to join. To encourage the writing process, we recommend that members attend regularly and have material ready to share every 4 to 6 weeks. Caribbean Steel Drums: Music of Trinidad, Calypso, and Jamaica (OUTSIDE)

Summer might be coming to an end by Justin Derman will transport you to the Caribbean with the steel drum calypso music of Trinidad and Jamaica. Enjoy such songs as I Shot the Sheriff, Brown Eyed Girl, Under the Sea, Hot Hot Hot, Banana Wind, Tingalayo, Yellow Bird, Matilda, Rum and Coco Cola, Banana Boat Song, Brown Skinned Girl Jump in the Line, Tequila, Tobago Jam, Fungi Mama, Everywhere Calypso, Linstead Market, Come Back Liza, Body Water, and Jamaican Farewell. Justin Derman has performed and toured through the west coast with guitarist Larry Coryell and Laurence Juber from Paul McCartney, other performers include Billy J. Kramer. He is a sought after theater musician, accompanying over 30 different musicals. His performance credits include orchestra percussion, contemporary music, world music and drum set experience. Justin performs frequently with his Jazz Trio and Steel Pan Ensemble while teaching privately and in the Berkeley Heights public schools. Justin performs his steel pans in Caribbean restaurants including Bahama Breeze , Hibiscus in Morristown and Breeze Cafe in Metuchen.This concert will be outside in the front of the library. Sorin Lungu from Creatively Yours has a special craft for the Summer.  A Summer beach plate with a starfish on it. Registration is required, craft kits are while supplies last, and one per person.  Priority will be given to Mahwah residents with a Mahwah Library Card.  If you are not a Mahwah resident you will be place on the waiting list.

The kit will have all the
necessary project materials and instructions. This project DOES need to be
“fired” and MUST be returned by August 20th to be “fired”.
“Firing” will take 2 weeks so call Tuesday August 31st to see if your
project is back at the library and ready to be picked up.

This craft is for adults only.

The world is a hectic place (even more so now), meditation has been known to reduce stress,relieve pain, and recharge mind and body. Many people are enjoying the benefits of meditation: companies like Google, Proctor and Gamble, Target, General Mills, organizations like the United States Marine Corp, the Chicago Bulls (under Coach Phil Jackson), some public schools, and even a U.S. Congressman. Leena Unnikrishnan and Nirmal Mukhi have over 20 years experience practicing Sahaja Meditation. This is a Zoom event so register online (Don’t forget to give us your email address).  Registration will close 24 hours before the event and we’ll send you the Zoom meeting number, password, and URL meeting link at that time.

Kids & teens can drop in each week to the Teen Section to try and break a special, fun “emoji” code and decipher the message for a small reward.

Are you in grades 5 & up?  Then invite your friends to battle it out in just-for-fun online tournaments, using your Nintendo Switch with Nintendo Online and a copy of Super Smash Bros.   Every Wednesday & Friday a new Arena ID will be created & shared on the Mahwah Library’s Teen events calendar for that day, and the library’s Snapchat (mahwahlibrary), so please spread the word.  To join our arena: choose Online mode, then choose Smash, next choose Battle Arenas.  The last step is to join our arena mahwahlib and enter today’s special Arena ID:
