Upcoming Events

The Library is returning to in-person events! 

The Library strives to provide a healthy environment for all visitors and event attendees.  In response to the ongoing pandemic, we have reduced attendance limits and require registration for many events.  In addition, we require that masks be worn at all times while in the Library, including attending events.

Registration opens for Mahwah residents four weeks prior to the event. Our neighbors are welcome to register two weeks before the event.

Andrew Schwarz delivers an all live, 70’s style rock concert faithful to the spirit of the classic, early Elton John recordings. Author Paul Kahan will discuss his book on one of Philadelphia’s most well known landmarks, the Eastern State Penitentiary. Paul Kahan presents the history of this revolutionary penitentiary, from its inception as a model of the revolutionary Pennsylvania System of incarceration in 1829 to the demands for its closure in the wake of ever increasing violence in 1971.

The craft workshop series is back in the library with a Turkey Votive Ceramic Craft.
The instructor is Sorin Lungu from Creatively Yours a ceramic painting and
glass fusion studio in Ridgewood and Tenafly. All attendees at the hour and a
half workshop will get hands on experience and create their own Holiday Ceramic. This program is offered both in person and as a take away
kit.  There will be a $25.00 non refundable
supply fee that must be paid at the time of registration.   Registration is at the Check Out Desk.  Take Away Kits can be picked up beginning October

The Wall Street Crash of 1929 with Rick Feingold

In 1929 most stock investors believed the market would rise forever. Economist Irving Fisher proclaimed, “Stock prices have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau.” The October 1929 crash brought the Roaring Twenties to a shuddering halt. Unemployment would rise to 25% and the Great Depression that followed would last 12 years. But not all investors would lose. Jesse Livermore nicknamed The Boy Plunger bet against the market and would earn 100 million dollars from the crash of 1929. Students in grades 9 – 12 can take the test online with a live proctor through Revolution Prep, and get a baseline score.  Prior to the test, Revolution Prep will send an email with details on how to access the testing materials, scoring app, and online testing room.  After the test scores are received immediately via the Revolution Prep scoring app you’re invited to review your student’s scores, for free, with our dedicated academic Advisor at a time convenient for you. During the session, they will breakdown your child’s score to understand areas of strength and weakness and develop a custom preparation plan.

Stories from New Jersey Diners: Monuments to Community with Michael C. Gabriele

Enjoy stories from through the Garden State, ‘the Diner Capital of the World” – sentimental recollections from diner owners, diner employees and loyal diner customers. Hear about the history of New Jersey’s diners business, and provide details on the era of lunch wagons from the 1890s and early 1900s. Diner experiences — good food, slice-of-life encounters with friends and strangers, and the heartfelt memories they inspire — reflect the state’s spirit, culture and mythology. Author Michael C. Gabriele has worked as a journalist, freelance writer and author for more than forty years including “Stories from New Jersey Diners – Monuments to Community”. Healthy Holiday Eating with Jennifer Shukaitis

Come learn about healthy options at that family or friends’ Holiday gathering as well as how to enjoy the foods you love without over doing it. Time to focus on nutritious, seasonal eating that includes fresh foods you will love for their taste and health benefits! Jennifer Shukaitis, MPH is a faculty member in the Department of Family and Community Health Sciences at Rutgers Cooperative Extension. During her time there, she has implemented programs in nutrition and wellness to audiences ranging in age from pre-school to older adults. She has also partnered with FoodCorps, the NJ Department of Agriculture, and several schools and non-profits to implement farm-to-school programming throughout New Jersey. This is a Zoom event so register online (Don’t forget to give us your email address). Registration will close at 3PM before the event and we’ll send you the Zoom meeting number, password, and URL meeting link at that time.

Coding Fun for Teens!

In these 45 minute classes, teens in grades 5 – 8 will be learning basic levels of programming through fun activities, and have the ability to work in groups which will help build confidence and prepare participants for future coding classes.Classes will run on Mondays & Thursdays from 4:00 – 4:45 PM for 8 weeks, and will occur over ZOOM.  The ZOOM link will be emailed to all participants prior to the first meeting on Monday, September 13th.

Every month, our book club gathers on Facebook to read “Book to Film” classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Godfather, Great Gatsby, Jaws, and more! Forever Young is one of the area’s premier oldies bands. This 6-member band will entertain us with music from the 1950s, 60s and 70s such as Dion & the Belmonts, Jay & the Americans, The Duprees, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, The Ventures, The Platters and more. Registration is required, priority given to Mahwah residents with a Mahwah Library card. Mahwah residents may register starting 4 weeks prior to the event; non-Mahwah residents may register starting 2 weeks prior to the event.
