Wecome Back to the Library!

On behalf of the Mahwah Public Library, welcome to a new school year! This is an exciting time of growth in every child’s life. The Library is here to help at every step!

The Library offers a wealth of programs and services designed just for children and teens, including engaging after-school activities; computers to work on assignments; one-on-one homework help and essay review; online language learning; and specialized resources to help with core curriculum. Of course, the Library also has a curated selection of age-appropriate books, eBooks, graphic novels, music, movies and video games to choose from. Our collections represent a wide range of ideas for growing minds to explore, and the reading/viewing choices of children and teens rests with their parents or legal guardians.

Finding the Right Space for You

The InBetween Teen Room

The Inbetween, on the Library’s lower level, is a popular place for teens to relax, meet up with friends, play games, enjoy programs and more in a lively, high-energy setting. But the Inbetween may not the right choice for every child. The children’s room is the perfect spot for younger children who want to read or socialize with peers in a quieter environment. Older students who want to read, study or work on homework are welcome to use the main concourse.

Access to Tools That Help You Succeed

We all need a little help from time to time.  The Library has your back with resources for live tutoring and homework help, language learning services, even in-depth courses led by experts in the field.  They’re all available, free, with your Mahwah library card.

Making Good Decisions About Behavior

Good decisions about library behavior

While we carve out spaces for different levels of activity, we expect all visitors – including students – to make responsible decisions about how they use the Library. Behavior that inhibits the orderly use and enjoyment of the Library by others will not be tolerated. Examples of this include loud, disruptive, or disrespectful conversation; running, use of abusive or offensive language; disorderly or violent conduct; and inappropriate physical or sexual contact. Use of athletic equipment is not permitted in the Library, or on Library grounds.

When necessary, we ask children and teens to find a seat and settle down. These conversations are quick, informal, non-punitive, and quickly resolve most issues. Occasionally, we will request individuals who repeatedly engage in inappropriate or disruptive behavior leave the Library and grounds for the day. This is also non-punitive and the individuals are free to return the next day. When necessary, we work closely with the Mahwah police and school officials to identify disruptive students so that we may communicate with their parents to resolve ongoing problems. As a last resort, we may temporarily ban individuals who either seriously or repeatedly violate the Library’s Code of Conduct.
